The price of moving a small apartment will depend on three variables: 1) how furnished the apartment is, 2) stairs, and 3) the distance being moved. Most companies do have a two hour minimum, meaning that if your job were to take less than two hours you are still obligated to pay up to two hours worth of labor. For a lightly furnished apartment with no stairs we find the average cost to be between $350-$400. For a heavily furnished apartment with a considerable amount of stairs the average cost is usually between $750-$900. Local moves will most likely be based on an hourly rate, while longer moves (>100miles) will usually be a fixed rate.

There are many variables that will decide how long your total move time takes. Some of these include the presence and amount of stairs, how furnished your apartment is, access points to your apartment, etc. For 2 bedroom apartments with no stairs, lightly furnished, and a close access point we find the average time to be between 2-4 hours. The major costs that a moving company will charge you for are labor, usually at an hourly rate, travel or gas fee, truck fee, and any additional fees for supplies or stairs. Simply use the formula (labor, at an hourly rate) x (projected move time) + (travel/gas fee) + (additional fees) + (taxes) = total move price

Items such as your bed frame, tables, mirrors, doors, or couch legs may need to be removed or disassembled in order to move safely. Washer, dryers, and refrigerators may also require basic tools to disconnect and reconnect. Your moving team should have all of these tools on their truck on the day of your move.
Some items your movers may not take include any hazardous material or waste. Examples include gasoline, propane, fertilizer, oils, pool cleaners, and other chemicals. Your movers may also not be able to take anything liquid or that contains dirt, such as water dispensers or live plants, as they pose an extra liability for other materials in the trailer during transport if they were to spill.

Consult with your moving team beforehand to make sure they have the proper supplies in order to transport any tricky items.
Any self-assembly dressers, nightstands, and other other furniture items with drawers should be completely emptied and removed from the item prior to moving. These furniture items are usually made of particleboard and are rather easy to break. If your dresser appears more durable, all items except clothing should be removed. Excessive clothing should also be removed to ensure the integrity of the drawer.
